In 1966, Pink Floyd played their debut gig at the Roundhouse in Camden town, London. It was London’s first ever all-night rave, and more than a decade of legendary rock and punk performances at the venue would follow. The poster for this show is very encapsulating of the culture at the time, I’ve put it at the bottom of this post. In late 1976, year zero for punk-rock, The Clash shot the front cover of their debut album in Camden. The Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, The Stranglers, The Undertones, The Slits, X-ray Spex, all have roots in London- many of them have played and are inspired by Camden specifically.
After the blur of my flights and travel, which didn’t end up being all that bad, I have made it to London! The plane landed and I instantly flipped to my British Punk Playlist, some tracks which I have listed in this weeks playlist (despite no radio-show this week, I’ll upload a playlist later). I spent some time by myself at the Camden market. Vintage record stores, camera refurbishing shops, lots of jewelry- only some looks handmade, and statues of Amy Winehouse everywhere.
The rain in London today was comically stereotypical. I bought tea at Tesco, and sipped it while I wrote and did my French homework at my friend’s flat. I slept on the floor of her dining room with the lights on, next to the relatively unused kitchen (she claims she just always goes out to eat). I ate fish and chips and drank a pint. I bought one of those stupid overpriced cameras (and I love it), and I am so close to finishing my book but I fall asleep every time I read it.
My body is pretty much used to the time here, just needed a 24-hour stint to get me on track. It’s 8 in the morning and I’m speaking to you from the flat, needing a shower, drinking tea (earl grey), and writing this post while using too many parentheses. This blog post is a little disassembled, and maybe not even enjoyable to read, get ready for more (hopefully) everyday, as I travel the next two weeks!
